Bosna i Hercegovina

I went to Bosnia this weekend and it was so much fun! In case you didn't know, Bosna i Hercegovina is just Bosnia and Herzegovina in Croatian/Bosnian and is the full name for the country. It's separated into two regions, Bosnia and Herzegovina (go figure). We (myself, the three other study abroad student, and the RIT premed students) left from Dubrovnik on Friday morning. We stopped in Mostar which is in the Herzegovina region. It was a cool city and the effects of the war were still apparent (it's like that in most of the country).

Mostar:

The Church:

This street was where most of the fighting went on during the war:

 Bullet holes in the buildings:

They said this stone sidewalk is like a massage for your feet, but I'm not buying it, it was uncomfortable:

This is the famous bridge in Mostar, and it was completely destroyed in the war. They rebuilt it in the late 90's-early 2000's using the same blueprints and techniques used over 400 years ago:

Some cool shops outside a mosque (one of about 22 mosques in 24 neighborhoods):

We were allowed to go into the mosque, and I was very surprised by that. The women didn't even have to put on scarves or take off our shoes. We did have to stay in the back, there was a rope that wouldn't allow us to go up front. But the tour guide said they are much more laid back here than other cities:

I have no idea what this says, but it's gorgeous:

The minaret of the mosque:

me and Emily:

A soup we had for lunch but I can't remember the name of it. It kind of tasted like chicken noodle soup without the chicken:

This is Ćevapi, a Bosnian specialty. It's basically just little mini sausages that you eat with a pita type bread, and it was very good:

Sarajevo:

After an afternoon in Mostar we left for Sarajevo. Sarajevo was one of the hardest hit cities in the war. About 11,000 people died and over 1,500 of them were children.

The view from our hotel room:

Town hall:

The river that they hate and think it's ugly. Also, some sewage is still dumped in it. mmmm:

Lots of Persian rugs:

One of the mosques:

Fountain outside the mosque to clean yourself before entering:

We got yelled at because we were in the courtyard and the girls were wearing shorts and had tank tops on so we had to leave:

This clock isn't the correct time, it starts 12:00am at sunrise and 12pm at sunset:

 Momma and kitten!!:

The bridge where Franz Ferdinand was shot:

Market where you can buy a lot of knock off purses/wallets/shoes:

When you walk out of the market and look to your left has eastern influences:

And to the right it has western:

Cathedral they wanted to model after Notre Dame:

Beautiful mountains in the background, this photo doesn't do them justice:

Burek, a Bosnian pastry filled with cheese (left) and spinach (right):

More Ćevapi

Pretty much any open land in Sarajevo had a graveyard. This one is a muslim one. They have a headstone and a foot stone, and they all face towards Mecca:

We walked up one of the hills at sundown on Saturday so we could listen to all the mosques' call to prayer. It was an amazing experience and i really enjoyed it. (Sorry for all the sunset pictures, I went a little crazy, there's even more on my camera, but it kept changing and looked really pretty!):

And I tried Turkish coffee! I actually really enjoyed it, even tho people hate it. It comes with sugar cubes and you pour some coffee into the little cup, take a sugar cube, dip it in the coffee, lick it (or bite it, depending on how sweet you want it) and take a sip of coffee. It was a little bitter, but I kind of liked it. At home we have to drink so much and water it down and fill it with cream and sugar, this feels like it weighs you down (plus the way they serve it in the copper set is so freaking cute, so i got myself one!) :

All this Turkish influence makes me want to go to Turkey!! (oh I also tried Turkish delight... not so delightful. I still want to like it so baldy because Edmund loved in the Chronicles of Narnia, I'm really disappointed with myself on that one)
